In the 1980s Roger Moore’s playfulness gave way to an altogether different tone with the arrival of Timothy Dalton as the next Bond. He was frequently seen re-reading the Ian Fleming texts on set, determined to capture the author’s original character study. 

Dalton’s brooding depth revealed new levels of the character. Through The Living Daylights and ALicence to Kill, Bond’s stoic integrity telegraphed the pressures of constant vigilance. He fulfilled his duties heroically, his burden willingly shouldered.
