Michter's is a renowned American whiskey brand with a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. Its story begins in Pennsylvania, where a Swiss Mennonite farmer named John Shenk established a distillery in 1753. This distillery gained fame for producing rye whiskey of exceptional quality, becoming known as Shenk's Distillery.Throughout the years, Shenk's Distillery underwent several changes in ownership and name, eventually becoming known as Bomberger's Distillery in the 19th century. Under the Bomberger's label, the distillery continued to produce whiskey, gaining a reputation for its craftsmanship and dedication to quality.In the early 20th century, Prohibition dealt a significant blow to the American whiskey industry, forcing many distilleries to shut down. However, Bomberger's Distillery managed to survive by obtaining one of the few licenses granted for medicinal whiskey production. Despite the challenges, the distillery persisted, albeit on a smaller scale.In the latter half of the 20th century, the distillery changed hands once again and was renamed Michter's, paying homage to one of its earliest distillers, Michael Shenk.
