Dissatisfied with the harshness and bitterness commonly associated with many bourbons of the time, Samuels set out to craft a smoother, more palatable spirit.
After experimenting with various mash bills and aging techniques, Samuels settled on a unique recipe featuring red winter wheat as a flavoring grain alongside corn and malted barley. This departure from the traditional rye-based recipe proved to be a stroke of genius, resulting in a bourbon with a remarkably smooth and mellow character.
In 1958, after years of meticulous refinement, Maker's Mark was officially introduced to the world.
